Plants and animals are so well adapted to one another. A few days ago, I watched Black Ducks and Mallards searching the rivers muddy edges for acorns, and eating what they found. Each acorn took a while to be swallowed. What a great trade plants and animals have going! Great food just when you need it in return for dispersal of the seeds that are stored, hidden, or in some other way left behind; a mutual unconscious generosity of action that promotes continuation of both species and of the relationship between the two. Most of us are kind of out of the loop; Winter poses no special problem for accessing our food supply if we shop at supermarkets. I do notice the difference in local produce this time of year- lots of root vegetables. I eat them, and basically I’m taking the plants own winter stored food supply. Seems kind of selfish, and cruel, but the good part for those plants is that farmers will plant more in the Spring. So in a sense, we’re still in the loop! And, it’s good to know, if we had no access to supermarkets and farms, the squirrels, turkeys, and ducks might be willing to share. Thank you Oak Trees for being around.
